How to Stop Being a Control Freak

This week I would like to share the basis of any change with you. Without doing this, any effort to implement change in your life, no matter how small or big the topic, will be useless.

Drum rolls please – admitting that you can’t do it alone. What you have tried so far in order to change did not yield the outcome you are searching for. We often hold on so tightly to a version of ourselves that we’ve gotten accustomed to. While we cling to our old identity we are incapable of change.

Oh, your ego might be going nuts right now. After all it sounds like an insult. “Me? Incapable? No, I can do anything!” And I absolutely agree with you. You are the creator of your life and your reality. So you have the ability to change. That’s right. But how can anyone move into new terrain when they are holding on to the old, trying to control the situation?

Why the “old” way doesn’t work:

  • Focussing on the problem: In order to try to have a different outcome you might be focussing too much on what you don’t want. Just imagine you want to stop eating chocolate. What happens most likely is that you are trying hard to not think about chocolate, but it’s not possible. In that very moment you are thinking about chocolate.
  • Controlling the situation: As long as you are holding on to the belief that you can control the situation and if you just put up some more willpower then you will make it, on an energetic level what you are doing is holding on to the problem.
  • Controlling the path to the desired outcome: You are not only trying to control the problem itself, but you are also trying to control how the solution will manifest. After all you are taking charge and putting your will power to action.

Surrender will set you free.

  • Ego takes a punch: It is HARD to admit that we are unable to change. Our ego goes crazy trying to resist. But once we are able to admit that all our efforts have failed we are free. We are free to give the care over to someone else.
  • Let Spirit take over: The only one who is all-knowing, omni-present, all-loving and powerful beyond measure is Spirit or God. Once we hand over our problems to Spirit we know it will be taken care of and it will serve our highest good.
  • Be open to receiving guidance: Once you have truly surrendered it is possible for Spirit to give you pathways and solutions that are miraculous and easy. Healing only turns into a struggle when we try to do it ourselves. Once we realize that Spirit can heal in an instant if it is meant for us, then we are free to live our life and move forward with ease.

Maybe you have noticed – this is also the first step of the Alcoholics Anonymous 12-Step-Program. Their program has led millions of people back to health and a happy life.
It all starts with the breakdown. The point where you are so desperate and hopeless that you turn to a greater power than yourself.

Now I’d like to hear from you. Did you need to hear this today? What are your experiences in making change happen? Have you ever been so desperate that you didn’t try to feed your ego anymore?

Much love and healing flowing your way
