5 Tips to reaching your business goals faster
When you start your own business, most of the time you’ll be a one woman show. You’ll get everything done from building a website, writing your own copy and scheduling social media posts. It’s easy to get lost in all that needs to get done and lose sight of the bigger picture.
Let me share with you what I’ve learned in the first year of my own business that will let you step forward confidently like the boss that you are.
- Backwards Engineer Your Goals
This sounds so simple, yet are you doing it?! If you don’t give yourself a deadline, you’ll keep going forever. So, don’t go too far into the future. Think in terms of 3 months: What are your 3 big goals that will mean progress for your business (increase revenue, increase exposure, etc.)? Now come up with strategies that will let you reach your goals (increase # of client calls, guest postings, etc.)? What are the actual tasks that you need to schedule into your calendar to reach your big goals (create a new lead magnet, post in FB groups, write articles, etc.)? Thinking that this is basic will let you miss out! All successful entrepreneurs strategize goals for their business and then check their resources to get it done. - Rock Your Calendar
Whenever you want to get something done, PUT IT IN YOUR CALENDAR. If it’s not in your calendar, it doesn’t exist. If it’s just in your head, it doesn’t count. Having a time set apart for a certain task makes it tangible and you won’t be flooded with other demands. This is the time dedicated to progress. Put it in your calendar and stick to your plans. If you are more visual, you can map out your tasks from 1) into a yearly calendar, so that you know when you are slipping deadline to get an important prerequisite for a follow-up task done. - Structure Your Days
I never start my days without knowing what I want to get done. Usually I craft out my 3 tasks that will mean progress in my business one day before. I also know what I want to get done in the whole week and the next one. I know when things take longer than I thought (and that’s completely normal). Awareness is key here. The more you are in control the more efficient you will be able to progress in your business. As a business owner it’s easy to reach a milestone and then go straight into creation and advance mode again. There is always more to do and you may not be where you want to be, yet. I get it. I feel the same way! Yet, when you don’t celebrate your wins and put it off until some indefinite time in the future, you are depriving yourself of an important motivation boost. Give yourself the possibility to celebrate small wins and get rewarded for your hard work, this will emphasize that you are a winner and on the right path. You’ll retrain your brain to focus on progress and how far you’ve come instead of dwelling on not being where you want to be. - Stay Energized
You are your most crucial asset to your business. If you don’t show up charged, your whole business suffers and if you’re anything like me, you’ll beat yourself up for making no progress. On a daily basis give yourself regular breaks, even short ones will work wonders and in the long run schedule self-care rituals that will energize you. This is not selfish – it’s necessary for your sanity, your business success and the impact you want to make for others.

Great tips! :)
On the scheduling front I would also add creating an environment/space that allows you to focus on the task you prioritise…it is so hard nowadays as there are so many distractions around!
One question: can you recommend an online tool that would help me manage the various areas/projects going on in my life (almost like a project management tool for individuals)? Thanks a lot xx
Hi Laurence, I absolutely agree with you. It’s essential to create the environment for whatever you’d like to achieve. So, not switching back and forth between tasks, but staying focused. We humans need time to ‘get in the zone’ and if we get disturbed (even if it’s only for a few moments), it takes us time to get back in the zone. Now imagine what that does to our productivity when we check our phone or Facebook every 10minutes.
There are tools like Evernote, Trello or Asana out there. But the thing is with these tools, that again you’d need to make time to work them right. Put in tasks, cross them off and still have them in your calendar as set times. Simple, but effective – start by putting your tasks in your calendar at a set time and simply do it. No excuses.
Hope this helps!
